Since the NRG AGM, there has been a lot of background work to ensure the continuation of a UHF repeater facility in the Northampton Area. Up until now, there has been nothing to report. However....
It was reported at the AGM that because of problems with the existing site of GB3NH, that it was planned to find a new site for GB3NH. It was also reported that we were in negotiations with the Northants Police for the use of their Potcote site. Whilst the plans were to move GB3NH, following the AGM, it was decided by the undersigned to try and make the repeater at the Potcote site a new repeater instead of a replacement one. 'TRY' being the operative word.
You can see from the ETCC website that it has taken nealry six months to get permission for the new repeater and that this was received by the keeper on 5th June 2009. It has taken a lot of hard work to get permission for the Potcote site and there have been many obstacles to overcome.
The ETCC are tasked with repeater frequency allocation for the UK amateur repeaters. Part of their remit is to manage the frequencies with 'responsible use of the spectrum'. Since GB3NH and GB3NP are geographically close, there is a large overlap of coverage. This may not be considered good use of the spectrum.
The NRG Committee want to keep BOTH repeaters. But it will NOT be our decision. It is up the the managing bodies to decide this. For the time being, there is an NOV for both repeaters. It is not known if or when the authorities will change this situation.
As with any changes, there will be winners and losers. Those that will applaud change and those that will citicise. It's the old addage, 'you can't please all of the people all of the time'. The fact is that the facilities on the existing GB3NH site are very much in doubt and action HAD to be taken to ensure the continuation of a UHF facility in the Northampton Area. It is hoped that you enjoy the new repeater when it comes on-air. It will certainly give better coverage for mobiles and fixed stations alike.
There is a huge amount of history and reasons why things can or cannot be done at our existing sites. Please feel free to ask if you want to know more - we have no secrets! |
